In many traditional homes even now infants are first wrapped in Turmeric dyed fabrics for its immense anti-microbial properties.
 
Indian textiles rich in anti-bacterial properties were often used to wrap Egyptian Mummies to delay the decaying process.
 
Indigo dyed curtains were used to make most of the mosquito repelling properties.
 
Temples & Indian households keep Marigold flowers & leaves from Ashoka trees at their doorstep due to their anti bacterial & anti microbial properties.
 
As stories & tales go,during the vedic times, rishi - munnies (holy sages) who led a spiritual life creating havans (oblation) ,sat in front of pyres for hours, sometimes days together. They wore protective clothing made from textiles dyed in cow’s urine. They followed a ritual of keeping the cow hungry for 2 -3 days and were then fed fresh mango leaves. Hereafter the first urine was collected to dye the particular fabric. This process was known to help the fabric become fire retardant & fire repellent.
 
In households till date the first thing that is usually applied to cuts is turmeric.
 
Myraballum nut is used with honey as a digestive.
 
Even today  Avala, Aritha and shikakai is used to nourish, wash and hair conditioning in India.
 
Though Henna has many medicinal properties but is still used as tattoo on hands, feet and other parts of body, dyeing hair and to heal the cracks on the heel.
 
The concept of organic farming was hardly known to the world few years back,but if we look into India’s history of farming,we will find that Indian farmers have been doing organic farming since long back,using many traditional methods to protect the crops from insecticides, pesticides, herbicides, termites etc. For example,to protect the crop from termites they spread out dried leaves throughout the farm for the termites to feed on & thereby not destroying the crop. Like-wise, there are many traditional ways to protect the crops.
 
It is being said that in Gulf countries people used talia rumalâ which was sourced from India to protect themselves from the heat strokes. This was a piece of fabric soaked in the castor oil after processing it for several days as castor is known for its cooling properties.
 
Cow dung and urine in India have many uses like as a fuel for cooking, as a fertilizer, as a Purifier - natural antiseptic qualities, Floor coating - used mixed with mud and water on floors in mud houses, as a Fertilizer - alkaline - cow dung ash is basically lime with a few other minerals mixed in, as a Pond ph balancer - thrown into pond neutralizes acid.
 
Ahimsa silk

- Do you know that silk worms are being killed mercilessly to get the silk yarn/filament?
- Do you know that 15 silk worms are being killed to get 1 gram of silk, 1500 silk worms are being killed to get one meter of woven silk (cloth)?
With ahimsa silk, cocoons are left alone for seven to 10 days. Once the worms mature, they are allowed to pierce the cocoons and fly away as moths. Only after that the manufacturing of peace silk begins. Each cocoon is checked individually to ensure that the moth has escaped before the silk thread is spun.
 
Tamarind is known to be used for printing for its acidic properties.
